“Welcome to the jungle. We’ve got fun and games.”
– Guns N’ Roses
Axl Rose wails while I run to smash a forehand across the court. I’m at Copper Valley Club’s Cardio Tennis, a fun class that combines tennis drills with a cardio workout.
After a warmup that includes freestyle swimming motions, butt kicks, and shuffling, we begin a series of tennis drills, hitting forehands, backhands, and volleys.
By the time Ozzy shouts, “All aboard…,” we are transitioning to a game called Burglar. We start in a circle with our racquets on the ground. We all run to the center and grab a ball. We can then steal balls from other racquets. The first with three balls on the racquet wins; it’s not so easy because balls keep getting stolen. It’s a drill that helps to develop quick movement while changing directions on the court.
We keep our heart rates up with another drill, the midcourt crusher, in which we make two lines, hit a forehand, and run to the back of the other line.
We cool down with more games, using low compression balls to play a tennis version of volleyball.
Cardio Tennis is a fun workout that flies by and is over before I know it.
Come join the fun! Cardio Tennis is offered on Saturday mornings and Tuesday nights to members at Copper Valley Club. You can find a cardio tennis location near you here.

Cardio… tennis. Hmmm. As much as I detest sports and hate working out even more, this system combines both very efficiently and I am almost tempted to try it!
What a GREAT idea for a blog you have, it puts a smile on my face! I love your honesty, audacity, sense of humor and commitment to make yourself into a better you. I think you’re already firmly on the path!
Blessings,

Thanks so much.

WOW, looks like a LOT of working out! Makes me tired just looking at the pictures and reading the “story” behind it! Always wanted to play tennis, this, after my leg recovers from surgery, may be the way to get into it. Wonder if there is such a thing in my area??

Looks like you are all having a blast and getting a good workout at the same time. I like to play tennis, and getting a good cross-training workout at the same time would be a great thing to be able to do. I am going to try get something like this going in my area for everyone. Cardio Tennis, Right On! Thanks for sharing, David
