Blog Action Day: BAD Girls

Today is Blog Action Day, and this year’s theme is “The Power of We.”

Social studies in a suburban middle school… Half the room is filled with 12-year-old girls who look at me curiously as I attempt to describe the mistreatment of girls around the world.

I tell them that a girl was shot in the head by the Taliban for speaking out for girls’ education. They tell me about the private tutors their dads hired when they struggled with a class.

I tell them that young women around the world still die needlessly in childbirth for want of a few dollars more. They tell me about their travel soccer teams, their ballet lessons, their cleaning people.

I tell them that over half the world lives on $2 a day. They tell me their mom’s daily latte costs over three bucks.

It’s hard to get through, but they want to help. We can.

It’s hard to get through to my kids just how good they have it compared to other kids in THIS country. Luckily my 13 year old son has had a couple teachers who really opened his eyes to things in Uganda and Haitii. I bet more sinks in than you realize.
