Oh, bring us a figgy pudding: We set a new caroling world record

{Celebrate your courage. Send me a postcard.}

“Oh, bring us a figgy pudding and a cup of good cheer …
We won’t go until we get some, so bring some out here.”

We never did get that figgy pudding, but my son David and I enjoyed plenty of good cheer as we joined 500 other Christmas carolers last night to set a new Guinness World Record.

Before caroling world record

The event in Westport, Conn., benefited the Lily Sarah Grace Fund, which supports the arts in memory of the three little girls who died in a fire last Christmas in Stamford.

There have been larger groups singing Christmas carols before, but this new caroling world record was set when 502 people traveled “door to door” in traditional caroling.

I was full of nervous excitement as we rushed from house to house and sang with the boisterous crowd through the beautiful Compo Beach neighborhood. The rules in this new Guinness category required the whole crowd to make it to the next house and begin singing within five minutes of ending the previous song, which definitely added to the fun.

Bucket List Bunch caroling world record

I signed up for the event with the Bucket List Bunch, a group that organizes events to check off their bucket lists.

Now I just need to bake some figgy pudding.

More about those Guinness World Records

Was it the skeeved-out fear I felt long ago for the man whose world’s longest fingernails spiraled out from his hands like psychopathic helixes that led to my fascination with the Guinness Book of World Records?

I can’t say for sure, but they’ve been fascinating me ever since.

A short quiz

See if you can match up the numbers to the world records.
