Sleeping in the Sahara

Sahara Morocco

In the Sahara,
collapsed on a carpet,
air so dry my eyeballs ache,
colors transform,
beige to orange to black.

Nearby, unseen,
a camel’s never-ending chewing
keeps me company.

I drift,
under a purer black than I’ve ever known
and never-ending stars.

I wrote this in response to the Gargleblaster prompt, “What’s so amazing that keeps us stargazing?” about sleeping in the Sahara in Morocco in 2010 (in 42 words).

  4. I think everyone has a story related to looking at a starry sky, so I’m really excited about this prompt. Yours is the first entry I’m reading, and I love it, even it my eyeballs ached in sympathy after reading the first sentence! I’m glad you included the photos, too.

Thanks–I loved some parts, and didn’t love others. Overall, it was a more stressful trip than I’m used to, but I’m glad I went.

Very nice! I think the camel chewing might kind of ruin the ambiance…

There’s something so, so amazing about the clear night sky when you’re away from light pollution. I love me some city life, but the night sky in middle of no where? Nothing beats it.

What an amazing adventure! There’s nothing quite like staring up at the sky when you’re far from civilisation and earthbound light. It can take your breath away.

That sounds like how I felt in a different desert, and it’s lovely! Desert skies really are the purest black, until you start to see the thousands of stars that were never visible before.
