#tbt to falling for a gem scam on our first afternoon in Bangkok in 2009… . The four of us squeezed into a glorified golf cart, gasped as our driver gave a polite bop-bop on his horn, barreled through a lane he’d just invented between two trucks, and inhaled a sooty, smelly mouthful of hot, humid air. . Obviously, standing on a street corner with our faces hidden behind a huge map on our first day in Bangkok could have identified us as easy marks. Lucky for us, a friendly man who spoke English approached us to help. He happened to be a teacher too! It happened to be a special day of cultural events our children would love! The nice man flagged down a tuk-tuk for us, and we were on our way…. Red Rocks! A Fourth of July concert at Red Rocks was a fantastic way to conclude our vacation in the West. About 30 years ago, Randy had been lucky enough to see the Allman Brothers there, and I had always been a little envious and hoping to see a show there someday. It’s an incredible venue, a natural amphitheater with huge rock walls on both sides of the audience and behind the stage, and a view of Denver and its suburbs in the background. The night started at 5 p.m. with a long walk up from the car. We passed a rattlesnake on the side of the dirt path we had taken as a shortcut. (We stuck to the road during the dark walk back to the car!) We saw the Devon Allman Project with Duane Betts (a shortened set due to rain, but they were invited back out by the other bands), The Wailers, G. Love & Special Sauce (a fun, unusual set that was a mix of hip hop and country music), and Blues Traveler, with fireworks going off in the background from seven or eight of the surrounding towns. What a treat! . . . Dancer at Nom Wah Tea Parlor – I was watching two people put away their bicycles in front of the Nom Wah Tea Parlor in Chinatown, New York, as my husband and I were about to enter. As I took a few photographs, a beautiful young woman came dancing into the frame, did a twirl, and left as quickly as she had come. She was followed by a man who was filming her, apparently shooting a scene in a movie. We had a wonderful lunch of dim sum and chrysanthemum tea to celebrate my birthday. It was a gorgeous spring day, and we walked for many miles in different neighborhoods of the city.
